Thais are not speak English at first language, many Thais also speak and understand English, though more so in Bangkok and the major tourist areas
As a general rule, English is not very widely spoken in Thailand. Main reason is Thais don’t use it often enough to become really fluent or proficient in it.
As a result you will be able to get by with the usual tourist “pointing and gestures” tactics, but if you want to have a more in depth discussion about something you are planning to buy in a store for example, most Thais will struggle to converse with you in any depth in English. You will often get very broken English at best or sometimes no English.
Thai people are almost always willing to help you out as best they can, However the number of Thais can speak English rising up every day as a growing number of Foreigners expats continue to move there and enjoy a very nice lifestyle in Thailand.
